Dress for Success on October 12th

On October 12 our speaker will be from Dress for Success.  This is an organization that provides professional clothing for women reentering the job market for interviewing and the first few days of work.  If everybody who is able could please bring any gently used professional clothing they would like to donate by October 12, Janet will bring your donation to the St. Paul location after our meeting.  They prefer the clothing be dry cleaned and on hangers, although this is not required.  Any unused trouser socks/hosiery and unopened makeup can also be used.

The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and inlife

To make a donation or to learn more about donating please check out the donation page on their website or visit their facebook page for upcoming events.

Combine fun and Rotary Service in Thailand

St. Louis Park Noon Rotary Club has sponsored another playground
park for the children of Thailand. This very special playground will be built
the week before the 2012 Rotary International Convention in Bangkok, and will
be dedicated in conjunction with the convention. District 5950 will be
highlighted at the convention for sponsoring this project. A member of the Thai
Royal Family will dedicate the playground on Saturday before the convention
(May 5).
The playground will be built by Rotarians who want to come and assist and will be the gift that Rotary leaves Bangkok for hosting our convention. PDG Paul Bierhaus has been working with the Bangkok Host Committee for two years to make this project happen.
In 2003, District 5950 built the largest playground in Thailand. Because of its success, the Host Committee of Bangkok wanted another playground for their children in need.
If you want to go to Bangkok, Thailand during the week prior to the convention to help build the playground, please contact PDG Paul Bierhaus at paul@bierhaus.net.

The Rotary International Convention is May 6-9,2012. Click on registration and housing information to learn about getting the best prices.

Why are you a Rotarian?

Come back to see what other members say about Why they’re a Rotarian.

When I went to my first meeting and they started to sing I have to admit I was a little worried about what I got myself into. When everyone recited the 4 way test….

  1. First is the truth?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

They had me. What other organization or club puts service before self! I love the good work that we do and the incredible accomplishments of Rotary International. Come on people….. Polio is almost eradicated. That I’m a part of it and helped in some small way is very fulfilling. The fact that everyone else here feels the same way makes it the best club ever! Mechanized system provided clean drinking water for 10,000

…………..article from RI news

More than 10,000 people in three communities in Ghana are receiving safe drinking water from a mechanized system built through the efforts of the International H2OCollaboration, an alliance between Rotary International and USAID.

Villagers in Ghana, celebrate the inauguration of the mechanized system

The water system is part of a $2 million project that is providing boreholes, hand pumps, and mechanized pipes, as well as ventilated pit latrines and showers, across Ghana’s Volta, Greater Accra, Eastern, and Central regions.

During a ceremony on August 21 in Abutia Teti, RI and USAID representatives joined Ghanaian government officials in handing over responsibility for the completed system to the communities of Abutia Teti, Takla Gborgame, and Nyive.
“This project is a great example of public and private partnership at its very best, to improve not only the quality of life, but life itself, immeasur-ably,” RI President Kalyan Banerjee said.
“This innovative partnership between USAID, the Ghana Ministry for Water Resources, and Rotary International saves lives by reducing these communities’ use of unsafe open water sources. Today, the community and the government of Ghana take responsibility for maintaining these facilities and for continuing to educate children and citizens in proper hygiene, creating conditions where our assistance is no longer necessary.”
The International H2O Collaboration is in its third year. As part of the ef-efforts in Ghana, Rotarians are also working with villagers to change their sanitation practices and provide training to maintain the new equipment.
The collaboration is also funding hygiene training and bio-sand water filters in the Dominican Republic, and a project in the Philippines to improve sewage collection and treatment that will help more than 150,000
people.

Be part of the STRIVE success story!

STRIVE’s success within Rogers High School is a source of pride and achievement for the whole Rotary club. The 2011-12 school year program resumes in a few weeks and more Rotary mentors are needed.

What does a table mentor do?
  • One or two Rotarian mentors are assigned to an ongoing group of STRIVE
seniors so you truly get to know “your” kids at your table.
  • Mentors attend the
(usually) bi-weekly sessions; facilitate exercises introduced during the presentation,
    and keep productive conversations going.
  • Mentors encourage their students’
attendance, participation, and overall growth during the school year.
Maria Sall of Tailored Injury Prevention Solutions had developed a new resource that reinforces each
session’s lesson. Students will receive a pocket card that lists the main point’s facilitators want STRIVE students to really grasp from that day’s training. The card may also include an action item or habit change reminder.

Please talk to Maria, Ben McEachern or any past STRIVE mentor about the role and rewards of being a table mentor. The pro-gram’s success depends on strong rotary involvement.

Curt Hinkle of Young Life

Curt Hinkle and other volunteer Young Life mentors spoke to our group on Sept 14th and they’re looking for community leaders interested in starting a Young Life group in Rogers.

Curt explained that Young Life doesn’t just start with a program. It starts with adults who are concerned enough about kids to go to them, on their turf and in their culture, building bridges of authentic friendship because these relationships don’t happen overnight — they take time, patience, trust and consistency.
So Young Life leaders log many hours with kids — where they are, as they are. We listen to their stories and learn what’s important to them because we genuinely care. We attend their soccer games, school plays and track meets. We try to be present in their lives.
Young Life believe in the power of presence. Kids’ lives are dramatically impacted when caring adults come alongside them, sharing God’s love with them. Because their Young Life leader believes in them, they begin to see that their lives have great worth, meaning and purpose.

This is the first step of a lifelong journey; the choices they make today, based upon God’s love for them,
will impact future decisions … careers chosen, marriages formed and families raised. All ripples from the time when a Young Life leader took time to reach out and enter their world.

They are eager to talk to individuals or groups who want to see Young Life in their community. They have made several inquiries to city leaders. A Start-Up Board Meeting is being held Thursday Sept. 29th and the Rogers Ice Arena from 4-5pm. If you’re interested in talking to someone contact the Elk River Young Life Center at 763-633-9663 or visit their website at Young Life Elk River
